"Opening of the Rink at Rockefeller Center"
American Skating World -- December 1999

On Friday, October 22 at 12:30pm, The Rink at Rockefeller Center officially opened for the season in grand style. A skating show, directed and choreographed by JoJo Starbuck, was performed to the live vocals of some of Broadway's top performers. Fans lined up at least six rows deep to watch the show, which was being taped by NBC television for a Metropolitan New York airing that weekend.

Champions On Ice was the title sponsor for the event. Tour skaters from each of the four disciplines were featured and had the opportunity to perform as the Broadway actors sang in front of the golden statue of Prometheus. Dorothy Hamill, Oksana Kazakova and Artur Dmitriev, Rudy Galindo, and Maya Usova and Evgeny Platov were joined by 1999 Junior Olympian Emily Hughes and Russian acrobatic stunt champion Victor Baryshevtsev. The sky was overcast, the wind a bit temperamental, but there was an undeniable excitement both on and off the ice for this annual ritual in New York.

After the introduction by Felicia Taylor, weekend anchor of "Today in NY", four members of "Footloose", Stacy Francis, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Robin Baxter, and Lori Holmes sang "Let's Hear It for the Boy". Rudy Galindo, wearing black pants and a shiny silver shirt, came out onto the ice and waited for Stacy to sing the first verse. He then began his number, completing a nice double axel, spread eagle, split jumps, and his signature high-quality spins. A section of fast-paced forward footwork to the beat was one of the highlights of the routine. Rudy interacted with the singers more than the other skaters, posing, flirting and making the actors part of his number.

Ten-year old Emily Hughes came out dressed in full costume to skate to a collection of Charlie Chaplain music. If she had any nerves competing in front of a huge audience and on the same ice as Olympic and World medallists, Emily didn't show it, as she stayed in character and skated an exceptional program. The highlight of Emily's program is a cantilever with deep edges, which drew appreciative applause from the spectators.

Jennifer Laura Thompson returned and was joined by "Footloose" cast-mate Jeremy Kushnier for the ballad "Almost Paradise". Oksana Kazakova, in a black top and bright pink skirt, and Artur Dmitriev in black pants and a silver-gray shirt, skated a smooth, flowing routine that perfectly suited the harmonic vocals. Using signature Kazakova and Dmitriev moves like the "Statue of Liberty" lift and the spin into throw double Salchow, Oksana and Artur added a series of gentle spins which showed an infrequently seen softer side of Artur. To highlight the crescendo in the music, Oksana did a split with her boot on Artur's shoulder, and he lifted her off the ice and did a fast turning spin that traveled halfway down the rink. It was a stunning routine and the perfect mix of live vocals with figure skating.

A change of pace came with the appearance of a New York Rangers jersey-clad skater in hockey skates, brandishing a stick and a puck. Victor Baryshevtsev used lots of humor and amazing skill in spinning and jumping in hockey skates to entertain the audience. Using pre-recorded music, Victor performed jumps like double toe loops (without a toepick!), and played with the ice-level VIP audience to the delight of the crowd.

Stephanie Pope from "Fosse" sang a soulful rendition of "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" as Maya Usova and Evgeny Platov performed. Several lifts were featured in this routine, as well as some spins with unusual positions. At one point Evgeny held Maya by one ankle and one wrist and did a sort of bounce spin. They showed off their long line during a lift where Maya's shoulders are resting in Evgeny's lap, as they glide down the length of the rink, her body just inches from the ice.

The sun came out for Dorothy Hamill. As the 1976 Olympic champion waited to the side, Ann Hampton Callaway began singing "I'll Be Seeing You" from the new Broadway show "Swing" which is set to open on December 9th. Dorothy Hamill's skating is still pure beauty of motion, and her simple red dress was perfect to show off her line. Deep edges in stroking into an Ina Bauer, spiral sequences, footwork into a double toe were all textbook. A layback spin that would make Dick Button gush brought instant applause from the audience. A long spiral around the rink and a final scratch spin rounded out what can only be described as a completely lovely program.

As Dorothy caught her breath off ice, the members of the cast of "Rent" assembled on the stage. Artur had changed into a red shirt and Rudy into a white one. The six Champions On Ice skaters took to the ice as "Seasons of Love" was sung. JoJo Starbuck's choreography for this number showed off the best of each of the skaters, as well as highlighting the strong vocals by the Broadway cast.

Opening with the skaters performing an extended serpentine six-skater footwork sequence around the rink, the finale allowed signature moves during step-outs. Kazakova and Dmitriev did a strong throw double Salchow out of a spin. Usova and Platov reprised their gliding low lift, with the variation of Evgeny going to one foot on the ice as he balance Maya's outstretched body. Dorothy showed off her famous Hamill Camel. Rudy did another spin combination with countless position changes. Rudy and Dorothy performed side by side forward spirals that were very striking. Emily Hughes and Victor Baryshevtsev came out at the end for the bows, and the gathered crowd gave a rousing ovation for both the skaters and the Broadway singers.
