September 2001 was a devastatingly horrific time in the lives of so many Americans. A couple weeks after 9/11, I attended a show at the Connecticut International Skating Center in Newington, the first time I had traveled outside my home area since the attack.

Sarah Hughes skated to "You'll Never Walk Alone." The rink's spotlights were at a blinding angle, but perfectly outlined her.  It was haunting and beautiful, emotional and inspiring.
